A new Rasmussen poll shows Democrat Tim Kaine and Republican George Allen tied at 46% each.
If you include “leaners” Kaine has a 1 point lead over Republican George Allen for the Virginia US Senate seat being vacated by Jim Webb. Both numbers are well within the poll’s margin of error and show a statistical dead heat.
The poll surveyed 750 Virginians likely to vote in the November election.
The poll’s cross-tabs show some interesting findings.
The Mainstream Media loves to play up the “gender gap” between Democrats and Republicans. And while they write entire articles on the “overwhelming” support women have for Democrats, they tend to ignore the even larger gender gap Democrats have with men.
And this new Rasmussen poll is no exception.
Yes, Tim Kaine is leading among women by 11 points, but George Allen is leading among men by 12 points. Both of these numbers are within the margin of error, but essentially a tie.
So it seems that for every female that Tim Kaine draws in by promising free stuff like abortions and birth control pills – all paid for by others – an equal percentage of men simply are turned off by the class warfare tactics of Obama and Kaine.
This poll’s political party breakdown favored Democrats by 1 point 39% compared to 38% for Republicans. And while it only sampled 23% with “Other” as their party affiliation, which is a bit low, the breakdown was nearly even with a 1 point advantage going to Allen.
56% of those polled were women which is a couple of points too high based on the 2008 elections.
In all, the Virginia Senate race is just too close to call.
